The Company Joyce and McGregor (Pty) Ltd commenced operations in ‘1904 with the purchase and development of the four original townships of Goodwood, Townsend, Vasco and Richmond. Goodwood’s 50th anniversary celebrations was held in October 1955 during which the Goodwood Jubilee Memorial Homes for the Aged was established. Money raising activities of various kinds were permitted, ranging from the hospital rag for the University of Stellenbosch with a float
procession on 24 March 1956, to an open air ballet on the lawn of GoodwOod Library in aid of Goodwood Jubilee Memorial Home for the Aged.

On 30 November 1959 the Association, Goodwood Jubilee Memorial Homes, was established and on that day incorporated under the Companies Act, 1926 (Act No46 of 1926) and that the Company is limited.

The main objects for which the Association is established, are — to acquire by purchase, donation, lease or in any other manner immovable property (with or without building thereon) for the purpose of utilizing same and/or erecting- thereon a home or homes for accommodation and maintaining therein aged European persons; in particular to accept the donation of approxim-ately,30,000 square feet of land from Joyce and McGregor (Pty) Ltd, situate in Goodwood Extension No 1, Goodwood Municipality, and a further donation by the said firm to the sum of E500″.The Articles of Association and the Memorandum of Association of Goodwood Jubilee Memorial Homes were also registered on 30 November 1959,Protea Home for the was opened on 18 April 1963 at 127 Alice Street, Goodwood by Mr JN Thompson, Managing Director of Messrs Joyce and McGregor (Pty) Ltd- whose contribution to this Home in celebration of the Golden Jubilee of Goodwood is gratefully acknowledged. Protea was originally built as a board and lodging house with 77 rooms.

Protea Flame was registered as a Home for the Aged on 6 March 1974, Sick Bays ware only later added. Protea Home for the Aged currently accommodates 116 elderly and frail residents. Jubilee Retirement Centre with 104 flats in Tygerdal, Goodwood was opened on 10 December 1988.
Goodwood Jubilee Memorial Homes redeemed their housing loan from the Department of Housing and Works on 9 June 1993. Goodwood Jubilee Memorial Homes was exempted from taxes and duties by the South African Revenue Services on 19 May 2004 and registered as a non-profit organization on 2 August 2004.
